18:39:21banisterfiendhey brixen, can i just return a VALUE from my C extension and ruby will be able to use it? or i have to do something to it first?

18:40:22brixenyes, you can. a VALUE is a ruby object

18:50:47banisterfiend?
18:52:46brixenwhy would you use a pointer to VALUE?
18:53:01brixenjust VALUE ary = rb_ary_new2(10);
18:53:01banisterfiendit's more the second line im concerned about
18:53:17brixenwell, first, rb_ary_new doesn't take a size
18:53:51brixenagain, the second line is taking the address of the returned VALUE. why do that?
18:53:53banisterfiendok i mean new2
18:54:10banisterfiendcos i guess im doing something a complicated way

19:50:22brixenbanisterfiend: why don't you use rb_ary_push instead of RARRAY?
19:50:30brixenRARRAY is an evil thing
19:50:47banisterfiendbrixen i was using rb_arry_store or wahtever
19:50:48brixendgtized: ugh. you're on linux right?
19:51:00banisterfiendbut thta didn't work for me, so i changed it to this RARRAY thing hoping that would work instead
19:51:32brixenthen sounds like the problem is elsewhere
19:51:50dgtizedbrixen: yea
19:51:57brixenwhy don't you start with creating an array and make sure it exists in ruby land
19:52:07brixenbanisterfiend: you're writing tests/specs for this, right?
19:52:12brixenstart simple
19:53:15brixenhrm, this sucks. I've got 1 failure on os x, ubuntu 8.04 32bit, and gentoo 64 bit, but the last bot report was clean
19:53:26brixenand I ran this on the same machine that ey64 runs on

21:26:33banisterfiendok i have no idea how i fixed the bug
21:27:34banisterfiendit was almost like a quantum physics thing, the minute i printed out the values and saw what they really were, the program started behaving as it should...almost like it could only get away with doing rubbish so long as i wasnt inspecting the actual values, but the moment in inspected them and found the values were as they should be there's no way it could behave the way it did, so it started to behave properly
